Woodpeckers class is for our Y5/6 children. Children in this class are taught English, Maths, Science, Religious Education, ICT and Grammar in a small group of 12 children, by the Headteacher, Mrs Overton, or an experienced teacher, Mrs Farrer, on Mondays and Thursday afternoons. They have teaching assistant support in the mornings from Mrs Webb.  In the afternoons, Woodpeckers Class learn about History, Geography,  Music, Art, DT (Design and Technology), PE (Physical Education) and PHSE (Personal, Health and Social Education).  There is a focus topic for each half term or term, generally based around History or Geography but linked into other subject areas such as Art and DT.  The topic for Spring Term 2018 is The Anglo Saxons.

On Monday mornings and Tuesday afternoons Robins class join Woodpeckers for PE sessions - indoor PE on Mondays (dance or gym) and outdoor on Tuesdays (games or athletics).  They also have a 6 week block of swimming lessons on a Friday afternoon at some point during the year.

On Wednesday afternoons Woodpeckers class are taught French by one of our School Governors, Mrs Carole Almond.

Children in Woodpeckers Class are encouraged to develop independent learning skills through regularly using our two internet based learning sites - Active Learn and Mathletics.  Links to these can be found on the website under the Pupil tab.  Children are also encouraged to read each day; to practise spellings and to learn their times tables.

In school, Woodpeckers are encouraged to take responsibility for aspects of school life such as running the tuck shop, organising collective worship each day and writing the monthly newsletter.  To prepare them for the move to secondary school, pupils in Y5 and Y6 have a number of taster or transition days to both Honywood and Stanway Secondary Schools.  Transition visits to other local schools can be arranged on request.
