Modern Foreign Languages
At Great Tey, we teach French as a modern foreign language in Key Stage 2. Our French curriculum is based on the National Curriculum, and aims to help pupils gain a coherent knowledge and understanding of another language so that they can communicate confidently in speech and writing. Our French curriculum aims to inspire children to feel able to express their thoughts and ideas in a different language. It aims to improve their confidence to travel to new countries and cultures, safe in the knowledge that they will be able to ask for what they need, and to encourage them to learn other languages in future.
We use a variety of resources to support our teaching and learning in French, including Salut! and Duolingo.
Please read on below to find more information on what we teach, how we teach it and how we ensure we are creating confident French speakers and writers!
Why do we learn a modern foreign language?
We are creating linguists of the future by:
- developing children's interest in, and curiosity about, the world around them and its cultures and languages
- holding a French Day every year to increase children's enjoyment and understanding
- ensuring children have confidence to communicate in a different language, making their thoughts, feelings and needs known in speech or writing
- revisiting key skills and knowledge across Key Stage 2 to ensure children's understanding and knowledge of French is embedded and can be used to compare different contexts
- equipping children with the knowledge of French they need to hold conversations and increase their knowledge of people from other cultures
- introducing children to the wide range of jobs people can do if they can speak more than one language and nurturing their ambitions to work in language-based jobs in the future, contributing to their communities and the wider world
What do we learn?
